
The National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA) has today made a symbolic donation of MWK 200 million to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in support of communities affected by recent disasters across the country.The symbolic presentation took place at the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) Conference Room and was presided over by senior government officials, members of the media, and representatives from both institutions.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, NOCMA Director of Finance, Sophia Mkandawire, conveyed the company’s heartfelt sympathies to families and communities affected by the disasters, emphasizing that NOCMA remains committed to supporting Malawians during times of need.Mkandawire highlighted that NOCMA’s role as a national oil company extends beyond ensuring the security, availability, and efficient management of fuel and strategic petroleum reserves. As a national institution, NOCMA recognizes its responsibility to contribute to the well-being of Malawians and support national efforts aimed at promoting resilience and recovery.
She emphasized that the people affected by the disasters are not strangers to NOCMA, but are its customers, partners, and fellow citizens.
“Every litre of fuel we manage ultimately serves the lives and livelihoods of Malawians.When communities are affected, we feel duty bound to support them because their resilience is directly linked to the nation we serve,” she said.
Mkandawire, further noted that the donation is intended to complement government efforts in providing relief support to affected households and communities.
Receiving the donation on behalf of DoDMA, Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs, Dr. Wilson Moleni, commended NOCMA for the timely support, indicating that nearly 4 million people have been affected by the disasters, with 29 deaths recorded so far.
Dr. Moleni emphasized the importance of partnerships between government institutions and the private sector in strengthening the country’s disaster response mechanisms and ensuring that assistance reaches those most in need.Looking ahead, NOCMA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting recovery and resilience-building initiatives. The company is exploring collaboration with relevant stakeholders to support the rehabilitation of selected health facilities in affected areas in order to improve access to essential services during and after emergencies.
Through its Public Relations Department, NOCMA also plans to roll out community awareness initiatives aimed at promoting safety, preparedness, and responsible energy use, as part of its broader commitment to empowering communities with knowledge and information.NOCMA remains committed to working closely with government, development partners, and communities to support national development priorities and contribute to building a resilient Malawi.As a national asset, NOCMA continues to uphold its responsibility to serve Malawians with integrity, compassion, and purpose.
