CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Mr. Clement Kanyama is a seasoned finance expert. He took the reins as Chief Executive Officer of NOCMA on May 5, 2023, bringing with him a wealth of experience from his previous roles. Most recently, he served as Director of Finance at ESCOM, where he played a key role in implementing the company’s Turnaround Strategy and even took on the mantle of Acting Chief Executive Officer from December 2020 to February 2022.

Prior to joining ESCOM in June 2020, Mr. Kanyama had a distinguished career at international organizations, including serving as Director of Budget and Finance at SADC and COMESA. In these roles, he was instrumental in overseeing budget and finance operations, ensuring compliance with European Union requirements, and implementing International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS).

Throughout his career, Mr. Kanyama has demonstrated exceptional leadership and expertise in finance, accounting, and corporate governance. He has served on various boards and committees, including:

· The Malawi Accountants Board

· Institute of Chartered Accountants of Malawi

· Public Accounts Examination Council of Malawi.

Mr. Kanyama’s academic achievements are equally impressive. He holds:

· Master of Science in Strategic Management

· Association of Chartered Certified Accountants certification

· Bachelor of Accountancy Degree with Credit.

With over 23 years of experience in finance and accounting, including 15 years in development cooperation, Mr. Kanyama has made significant contributions to socio-economic development across Africa. He considers himself fortunate to have had numerous opportunities to serve his country, both domestically and internationally.

DEPUTY CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Micklas Reuben has over 20 years of experience in oil operations management, with a strong background in fuel inventory management, product quality management, logistics, and health, safety, security, and environmental management. He has a proven track record of achieving operational excellence, improving safety standards, and driving business growth.

Mr. Reuben leads the development of fuel supply tender documents and contracts for National Oil Company of Malawi Limited and successfully negotiated sales contracts with various suppliers. He is instrumental in implementing a stock management monitoring tool and defects close-out tracking tool, resulting in improved operational efficiency.

Micklas has held various roles at National Oil Company of Malawi Limited, including being Depot Manager and Director of Operations. He also worked at Puma Energy Malawi LTD as Aviation Operations Manager and at BP Malawi LTD/Puma Energy Malawi LTD as Depot Manager as well as Bulk Fuels Dispatcher.

Mr. Micklas Reuben holds:

  • a Master of Sciences in Strategic Management from the University of Derby (UK)
  • a Bachelor of Sciences in Environmental Sciences and Technology from the University of Malawi, and a Diploma in Laboratory Technology.

Dr. Larry Nita

DIRECTOR OF CORPORATE SERVICES

Dr. Larry Nita is a seasoned legal and governance expert with over 15 years of experience in providing expert governance and legal advice, drafting legislation, and leading high-profile cases. As a licensed legal practitioner, he has a strong background in international law, governance, sustainable development, and diplomacy. He is a United Nations Fellow of International Law and a recipient of several scholarships including Scottish Government funded Millenium Project (for Master of Laws Degree); World-Wide Challenge International (as a Student Expert in Central America), UN International Law Fellowship, and University of Dundee’s, Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP) (offered for PhD but not taken).

Dr. Nita reports to the CEO and as a Director of Corporate Services, he serves as a Company Secretary having been duly appointed as such and is responsible for the following functions within NOCMA:

a) Legal and company secretarial services,

b) HR and administration

c) Information communication technology

d) Research and development

e) Planning monitoring and evaluation

Throughout his career, Dr. Nita has held such various roles as:

a) Special Advisor to the President of Malawi on Legal Affairs

b) Managing Director of a private law firm called Albaart Chambers

c) Legal Adviser for Malawi Investment and Trade Center

d) Legal Expert for a joint Malawi-Tanzania Songwe River transboundary Development Programme

e) Senior State Advocate for the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs

Dr. Nita’s expertise extends to international law, sustainable development, and diplomacy. He has worked closely with academics, policymakers, senior government officials, and has presented papers on governance and development at international conferences hosted by the United Nations, African Union, among others, and played a pivotal in institutional development and reforms of Central Medical Stores Trust, Malawi Pharmacy and Medicine Authority, National Council for Higher Education, among others. He has also trained law enforcement personnel and local communities on various legal issues.

In 2011 as master’s student, he won a World-Wide Challenge Scholarship to work with Belize Government in central America as a Student expert on energy governance. His Master’s degree in law thesis was on Energy Governance and Environmental Sustainability.

 

Dr. Nita holds:

a) Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Development Studies and International Relations from Universidad Azteca. He conducted research on Governance, Regional Integration and Globalization.

b) Master of Arts in Diplomacy and International Relations from Africa University of Diplomacy, Counseling and International Relations. He Researched on Transnational Enterprises and Human Rights Responsibilities

c) Master of Development Studies in Development Economics from Skyway University. He researched on Democracy, Decentralization and Development in Africa

d) Master of Laws in International Law and Sustainable Development from the University of Strathclyde. He carried out research on Energy Governance and Environmental Sustainability in Malawi: Policy and Law

e) Bachelor of Laws Honours Degree from the University of Nairobi. In his research he critiqued law as a stand-alone discipline.

In addition to his professional experience, Larry has demonstrated leadership skills, serving as President of the Lilongwe Archdiocese Young Christian Workers from 2016 to 2018 and successfully convened and chaired the first ever National Catholic Youth Conference. He was a Student Representative for the Master of Laws Program from 2010 to 2012 and Law Students Leader for his Class of 2006. He served as a Student Leader of Jesus Disciple Movement from 2003 until 2005 at Nairobi University. In keeping with his sustainable development studies and human empowerment academic background, he has also facilitated the registration of various organizations, including Ntchisi Organization for Youth and Development (NOYD) and National Evangelical Christian Organization for Social Services (NECOSS).

DIRECTOR OF FINANCE

Sophia Pauline Mkandawire is a seasoned finance professional with over 20 years of experience in driving business growth and delivering strategic results in the energy and financial services industries. With expertise in strategy formulation, financial reporting, and team leadership, Sophia has established herself as a results-oriented individual with a passion for leadership, teamwork, ethics, and integrity.

Throughout her career, Sophia has held various leadership roles: Chief Finance Officer at Puma Energy Malawi Limited, Financial Controller at Puma Energy Malawi Limited, Business Planning Analyst at BP Malawi Limited, and Business Manager (Sales Manager) at BP Malawi Limited. Earlier in her career, she worked as MIS Supervisor, Planning Associate, and General Ledger Accountant for ExxonMobil Malawi Limited. 

Her achievements include realising the much-needed wholesale margin increase for Puma Malawi after engaging the regulator responsible for pricing, MERA; improving cash flow forecasting accuracy to aid decision making; successfully leading a cost reduction exercise while not affecting service delivery, and leading and motivating the finance team.

Academically, she holds a Master of Business Administration Degree (with Merit) from the University of Derby, and a Bachelor of Accountancy Degree (with Credit) from the University of Malawi. Professionally, she is a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi (ICAM).

Sophia currently sits on the Board of the National Bank of Malawi Pensions Administration Limited (NBM-PAL) as a non-executive Director, a Trustee of the Unrestricted Pension Fund (UPF) of the NBM-PAL, and a member of the Investment committee of the NBM-PAL UPF. She also sits on the Board of the Training and Research Unit of Excellence (TRUE) as a non-executive Director, and Chair of the Finance committee. TRUE is an organisation doing medical research on malaria and pregnancy induced anaemia. Due to her CFO role at Puma, she was she was in the Finance committee of the Petroleum Importers Limited (PIL), a member of the Investment committee of the Puma Energy Malawi Pension fund, and a member of the Press Corporation Limited Motor Fund.

Outside of work, Sophia enjoys keeping fit, singing, cooking, reading, and traveling. She values relationships and personal growth, making her a devoted individual with a well-rounded approach to life.
