NOCMA Empowers Students and Promotes Environmental Conservation at Chilumba Secondary School

On Friday, 30th January, 2026, the National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA) carried out a successful tree planting exercise at Chilumba Community Day Secondary School in Salima District. The initiative is part of NOCMA’s ongoing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts to promote environmental sustainability and community development.

The exercise is part of a broader effort to plant 2,500 trees in Salima alone, demonstrating NOCMA’s commitment to restoring forest cover and conserving the environment. Last year, NOCMA partnered with the Soche Mountain Conservation Trust in planting trees on Soche Mountain, and the company has since pledged to ensure that tree survival rates remain high.

The event was graced by NOCMA’s Director of Finance, Sophia Mkandawire, who emphasized the importance of tree planting in mitigating climate change and protecting Malawi’s natural resources. She encouraged the students, particularly girls, to stay committed to their education, highlighting that they too are capable of achieving great success and holding key leadership positions in the future.

“Just as we plant trees to nurture the environment, I encourage each of you to nurture your talents and aspirations. Girls, you have the ability to excel and contribute meaningfully to our society,” said Mkandawire.

Acting Director of Natural Resources and Environment for Salima District Council, Adam Jason, praised NOCMA for the initiative, noting that it comes at a crucial time as the district continues to face challenges posed by natural disasters. He expressed optimism that the partnership would help restore forest cover, conserve the environment, and build a culture of sustainability among the youth.

“This effort by NOCMA will go a long way in bringing back our forests and creating awareness about environmental protection. We encourage the company to continue supporting such initiatives,” Jason remarked.

The tree planting exercise is part of NOCMA’s broader CSR strategy, which also includes projects in health, education, culture, and sports. Through these efforts, NOCMA continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainable development and empowering Malawian communities.
